Space enable monitoring of illegal gold mining
Start date
01 January 2018End date
31 October 2019Overview
This project aimed at providing increased detection and efficiency in monitoring illegal gold mining in remote forested areas of the Antioquia region in Colombia, enabling the Government (represented by Secretar铆a de Minas - Gobernaci贸n de Antioquia) to take appropriate action. The project had to develop and deploy an operational tool, which made use of freely available Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data for change detection, and incorporated machine-learning techniques to represent suspected areas of illegal mining with their calculated probability, in a rich and user-friendly web portal informing the relevant authorities.
