"During my foundation year, the academic staff were always super friendly and helpful... From day one, they were genuinely invested in helping us make the most of our time at university."

Why did you choose to do a foundation year?

During sixth form, I experienced health issues and couldn't achieve the grades needed to enter Surrey’s Psychology BSc course directly. I was thrilled to discover that a foundation year was available, enabling me to pursue my academic and future career aspirations. With time away from education, I realised that this additional year to develop my academic skills would be essential for successfully transitioning into the first year of my degree.

What did you enjoy about it?

I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. The academic staff gently eased you into coursework and were there with you every step of the way. I loved being in a small cohort because I felt comfortable sharing my thoughts with open-minded peers who had similar interests. This sense of community allowed me to genuinely be myself and connect with anyone, which helped me form lasting friendships.

What support have you received at Surrey?

During my foundation year, the academic staff were always super friendly and helpful; no question was unimportant or silly. They would set aside time during the week to see us for anything, from guidance on decisions to support with assignments. From day one, they were genuinely invested in helping us make the most of our time at university. They were so easy to talk to!

I thrived during my studies until I faced a setback with my health, which led to considerable worry. But the incredible academic staff really lifted my spirits. They reassured me that with the right support and accommodations, I could navigate the challenges ahead – and I did! I couldn't have done it without the invaluable support from the , alongside Surrey's exceptional Disability and Neuroinclusion services.

"Be patient and kind to yourself; this educational pathway isn’t a waste of time or a sign that you are falling behind compared to your peers – it’s a valuable stepping stone in your own academic journey."

How has your foundation year had an impact on you?

The foundation year was essential for me; without it, I wouldn't have been able to hit the ground running when I started my first year. I gained greater confidence in my academic abilities and transformed my attitude towards myself, largely because the staff genuinely cared about my growth as a student and an individual. At the beginning of my first year, being familiar with the campus and knowing how to reference and write a good-quality essay provided a sense of comfort I hadn't realised I needed until that first day arrived.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing a foundation year?

It is definitely worth it. If you are worried about the pressures of university and whether it is the right choice for you, a foundation year is a great way to test the waters before fully committing. Be patient and kind to yourself; this educational pathway isn’t a waste of time or a sign that you are falling behind compared to your peers – it’s a valuable stepping stone in your own academic journey.
