Midwifery BScWhy do you want to be come a midwife?
I’ve wanted to be a midwife since I was 12 years old, however I was encouraged by my family to pursue a degree in English. After achieving my bachelor's in English Literature, I quickly realised my desire to become a midwife was still there so I applied to Surrey that same summer and have never looked back.
What do you like about your course and why?
I love the Midwifery course because we spend half of our time learning theory at the University and the other half gaining experience out in practice. Even as students we are equipped with the knowledge and foundational skills to really make a difference.

What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
I really like how green the campus is! Being surrounded by nature and having easy access to it has made a difference to my mental health, especially whilst going through assessment periods.
If you’ve completed a clinical placement, what did this involve? What were the highlights?
Most of my clinical placement rotation has been on the postnatal ward, working alongside a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver close and compassionate care to parents and their newborn babies. A highlight for me would be helping a new mother learn how to breastfeed, despite it being challenging for her initially. Realising that I had the knowledge to help support and comfort her made me feel confident in my skills moving forward and created a beautiful memory.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
I’m aiming to work in a continuity of care team when I qualify. This means I’d care for a small caseload of people throughout their pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period – so instead of just popping in and out like shift work, I’d actually get to know them and be there for the whole ride. That deeper connection is what made me fall in love with midwifery in the first place!
What advice would you give to students thinking of studying your course?
Stop overthinking it and take the leap! You’ll never feel ‘ready’ enough, but midwifery isn’t about being perfect – it’s about being present, being passionate and being willing to learn. If you’ve got that spark, follow it. This profession needs people like you.
